Introduction to BioGrids

BioGrids provides a comprehensive collection of over 800+ scientific software packages optimized for computational biology and bioinformatics research.

What is BioGrids?

BioGrids is a software infrastructure project that eliminates the complexity of building and configuring scientific software. We provide:

  • Pre-compiled binaries optimized for high performance.
  • Dependency management that handles complex library requirements automatically.
  • Version control allowing multiple software versions to coexist seamlessly.
  • Easy installation through both Graphical (GUI) and Command-Line (CLI) tools.

Key Features

  • isolated Environments (Capsules): Each application runs in a controlled environment to prevent conflicts.
  • Cross-Platform: Support for Linux, macOS (Intel & Apple Silicon), and Cloud (AWS/GCP).
  • Continuous Updates: Regular releases ensure you always have access to the latest tools.

Membership & Access

BioGrids software is available to members of the BioGrids consortium. Membership is open to academic and industry researchers.

1. Join the Consortium

Apply for membership at biogrids.org/join.

2. Register Your Account

Once you are a member, register for an installation manager account at biogrids.org/registration. * Note: Use your institutional email address (e.g., .edu, .org, .gov). * Verification: Your lab's Principal Investigator (PI) must verify your membership.

3. Accessing Software

You can manage your software collection using: * Graphical Interface (GUI): Ideal for a user-friendly, visual approach. * Command Line (CLI): Perfect for advanced users and server environments. * Site Installation: For large institutions requiring a full local mirror of the collection.

Supported Platforms

Operating Systems

  • Linux: Fully supported on RHEL/CentOS/Rocky/Alma 8+ and modern Ubuntu/Debian.
  • macOS: Native support for macOS 14+ (Sonoma/Sequoia) on both Intel and Apple Silicon.
  • Windows: Supported via WSL2 (Windows Subsystem for Linux).
